1:38 pm	Helping our RE program along The Children's Religious Education program at NWCUUC is one of our brightest stars. Enrollment is approaching 50 children and youth, and attendance is excellent. Our guests are quick to get their children involved--indeed, they say that the welcome their children receive has been a critical reason for return visits. Not only are children learning important lessons about themselves and religion, they're making great friends and expressing their creativity and positive energies every week. And yet, the Children's Religious Education program is coming into its adolescence. We're quickly moving past the point of cobbling bits together, to becoming an intentional program with long-term plans. With that, obviously, comes greater needs! FREE ways to help the program: Volunteer your time (in the classroom, gathering, organizing, making bulletin board displays, fundraising) Thank a volunteer Donate-- *Old tshirts/button-down shirts as smocks *Binders, paper, and other office supplies (We would LOVE a paper cutter!) *Classroom books and music (Will be inserting a link for books we could really use!) *Low tables *Rugs Not-free ways to help the program: Buy any of the items listed above Gift certificates for craft stores, bookstores, or general merchandise stores (Comment on this)

7:48 am	UNICEF boxes and Eid A couple of quick updates, to be posted here and to the NWCUUC yahoogroup: 1) Please have your children bring in any money collected for UNICEF this Halloween. They may bring it to the front of the sanctuary as we start Children's Story, or they can simply bring it to me. 2) This Sunday will be a Special Sunday--all children and interested adults will gather in Clara Barton Hall (Phase II) to enjoy Eid al-Fitr--the feast at the end of Ramadan. IF YOU LIKE, children may bring a canned good as part of the traditional gift to the poor (and a start to our Guest at Your Table season!) 5:27 pm	Upcoming RE Schedule It's UNICEF season! We'll be distributing boxes and talking to the children this coming Sunday (Oct. 24th). And take a look at the holiday cards we have to offer! Our Pre-K/Kindergarten will be reading a story from Frog and Toad are Friends, then listing the many ways that they can help others. Next week, they'll start their next curriculum--Celebrating Me and My World. Sunday, the first and second graders will discuss making smart choices, read "The Tree House" by Lois Lowry, and do a letter-writing exercise. Next week they'll start the primary level In Our Hands curriculum, expanding their peace work into a beginner's social justice unit. The upper elementary (3rd, 4th, 5th grade) class continues with Timeless Themes--this week they'll discuss avoiding/accepting responsibility through the story of Jonah and the Whale. Our middle school class will tackle the topic of justice with the What Do You Stand For unit--activities range from a just/unjust relay game to putting a fairy tale character on trial. High school continues their discussion of developing one's own spirituality AND they'll probably take some time to discuss San Antonio Rally! And have you noticed? Halloween falls on a Sunday this year. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes to church on October 31st! (2 Comments |Comment on this)

1:30 pm	Children's RE plan for October 17th First of all, welcome! For our Pre-K to Middle School students, October 17th will be a Special Sunday program--a belated Sukkot. Sukkot is a Jewish holiday--a harvest festival which also remembers the long journey of Exodus. We're planning to make a simple sukkah, enjoy harvest treats, decorate gourds and make Sukkot necklaces. If the weather cooperates, we'll be outside in the garden area. If not, we'll be in Clara Barton Hall (the large area formerly known as the Phase II space.) Hope everyone can make it--and yes, we can always use more folks for both set-up and helping the children!
